The Art of Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the art of being fully present and aware, and focusing our attention where it matters most. Little do we know, practicing mindfulness is actually within all of us. We all have the capacity to be present and aware, and it doesn’t require us to change who we are - simply our way of thinking.
Can you imagine living in a world where you constantly feel overwhelmed and so easily react to even the tiniest of circumstances? I can. Because until I practiced mindfulness, that was my life. Anxiety, pressure, low self-esteem. Sound familiar? We so often entrap ourselves in moments other than now - daydreaming and losing ourselves in thought, panicking at the he-said, she-said (as if it really matters!), and becoming out of touch with our mind and body. Mindfulness was transformative for me - in my business, my marriage, and my overall well-being.
Mindfulness allows us to reduce stress, enhance performance, gain insight and awareness through observing our own mind, and increase our attention to others’ well-being.
Since practicing mindfulness, I have been more kind to myself, suspended judgement and fear, and allowed myself the freedom to think freely without the weight of the world on my shoulders. Practicing mindfulness is different for everyone, but here are a few simple ways I have implemented it into my life:
- Taking short pauses throughout the day
- Quieting the mind by watching my thoughts (or drifting off to my happy place)
- Deep, slow breaths
- Walks in nature
- Rain sounds (when going to bed or taking a nap)
- Meditation / yoga
- Breathing meditation
